Are you ever worried about bugs getting into your yard, or even in your house? You could use the typical name brand poison spray and risk getting a disease or brain and organ damage.

However, there is an alternative to that. Essential Oils sprays can do all the amount of the damage to bugs, and none towards you or your family.

Essential Oils are extracted from plants that have the scent of the plant it was extracted from. That is why they have different smells and are used in different ways.

What’s wrong with traditional bug spray?

“Traditional bug spray has been used way more than Essential Oils bug spray. Why should I use something else when I know my bug spray and repellant already work?”

Some people are going to feel uncomfortable with using something they are not used to using.

When something new comes along or when something familiar is changed, it’s natural for people to be skeptical about the performance and efficiency of the new product.

However, your common spray may not be as safe as you thought. Most typical Bug spray repellents use a product called Deet. What is Deet you ask? Deet was developed in 1946 by a scientist named Samuel Gertler.

He made it help the US Army during World War II as it was reported that more men were killed from mosquito-borne illnesses that enemies on the field.

Since it was available to use after the end of the war, it was marketed for civilian use. Later during the Vietnam war is when the U.S. Army would officially start using it.

“If it’s been used for so long, why is there a problem with it?”

This product was made nearly 80 years ago. It has been proven that back during that era, people knew that smoking was bad, but the still continued to smoke, and we know today that it can cause cancer.

Deet has not been reported in causing cancer in any case, and it has been defended many times that it’s safe, if used as directed to. This product can be safe, but there can also be severe repercussions.

If you leave a spray containing Deet on your skin for a to long of a time, you may experience irritation, swelling, redness or a rash. If the spray comes in contact with your eyes you may experience watery eyes, pain, or irritation.

If Deet comes is digested or even breathed in it could lead to upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting. There have also been a few cases where Deet has been known to cause seizures.

Don’t forget, if a spray that uses Deet is applied to the skin and is thoroughly washed off with hot water and a bar of very good soap, it will stay absorbed in your skin.

If it was applied or touched by your hands, there is a possibility that it can be ingested. On top of being very harmful to normal adults, it could be even more serious for children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that products and sprays including Deet should not be used on children less than 2 months old.

They also recommend that those products should not be used for children older than 2 months more than once a day. Deet can also be harmful to pets as well.

It has been reported that sprays that were meant to be used on dogs including Deet can cause shaking, excitement, lack of coordination, vomiting, and even seizures. That’s only from being exposed to it on the skin/fur.

If the dog were to lick itself after applying the Deet spray, it would be much worse. Most of these problems can be avoided, but you have not heard the worst that Deet can do.

When paired with the other insecticides inside different sprays, Deet can become more than an irritant. It becomes as deadly as a neurotoxin.

Neurotoxins in a large amount can cause a break down of muscle tissues, organ failure, or even death. Sprays that contain Deet can have a range of 5% to 99% of Deet inside the product.

The higher the percentage in a product, the higher the risk you take.

What is an Essential Oil?

An Essential Oil is an oil that comes from plants, trees, and flowers. You first pick your plant early in the morning.

The reason why is in the morning your plant will most likely be wet or have dew on it to make sure it’s still wet and is fresh. Place it in a bag and lightly crush it.

Next, take it out of the bag and place it in a jar with a clear oil that will not overpower the smell of your plant. Common oils to use it with are almond oil, jojoba oil, or canola oil.

Then set in a window for the sun to set on it for an entire day. Last take out your old plant and put a new one of the same kind in by using the same steps.

Doing this for 3 days will give you a naturally made Essential Oil of your own!

What’s so good about using an Essential Oils bug spray?

Essential Oil sprays and repellants can be much safer than regular Deet sprays. The only problems with using Essential Oils bug sprays and repellants come from not diluting the oil.

If you were to use a single oil or multiple oils together, not in a typical product, they could have minor effects on your body such as mild irritation.

However, every Essential Oils product is diluted with water to not only be risk-free for harm, but it also lasts a lot longer for usage. On top of a risk-free scenario, they come in a variety of different scents.

What Essential Oils should I use for which bug?

What you’ll find in most Essential Oils products is that there will be a variety of oils mixed with each other to be an all-in-one spray.

However, I will break down the list of the most common bugs and what repels them from leeching on and biting your bodies.

Mosquitoes are repelled by many Essential Oils. The list of oils includes Basil, Citronella, Clove, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Peppermint, and Thyme.

Flies are also repelled by many Essential Oils. The list of oils includes Basil, Citronella, Clove, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender, Lemongrass, Mint, Rosemary, Tansy, and Thyme.

Fleas have a slightly shorter list of Essential oils that they are repelled by. The list of oils includes Cedarwood, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Orange, Pine, and Tea Tree.

Ticks have a more selective list of Essential Oils that can repel them. This list of oils includes Grapefruit, Juniper, Oregano, Rosewood, Rose Geranium, and Thyme.

With that said, let’s get started with this list of the 10 best essential oils for bug spray and their reviews for 2019.
